Who knows beef better than the Texans? In Santa Cruz you will get your answer at Big Tex Kolache on the corner of Second Ring and Alemana.
From the minute you enter the little place you feel like you are entering one of those great little food joints off-roads down San Antonio-way. Despite all you may have heard about their burgers, you may have trouble describing what makes a great burger. But one bite at Big Tex’s and you get your answer: A great burger should taste completely of itself – the meat is the star, and everything else just makes it enough to wanna make a grown-man cry.
So, suddenly, somewhere near the geographical center of all of South America, you find yourself thinking, that this is possibly the single best burger you’ve ever bitten into.
Could this be?
It is.
How could it be?
Well, it is exceptional in many ways. Adrian, the owner, chooses the kind of meat he puts in this burgers – he has made it so it has just the right amount of fat for great flavor, I tell you below how I know – and he grinds it himself. He has obviously managed to teach his stuff how to cook it just right, letting the bits of fat melt right into it and giving the burger the rich flavor of its own fat, a good sear, not pressed, not overcooked, you can taste this. Then there is the bun. Baked in their own bakery, it is soft and unobtrusive, meant to complement the beef and not just sandwich it. This one marries the burger. Crisp onions, tomatoes, jalapeno, not too much, and ahhh … you have one luscious Texas-style burger: plump and juicy, with a good char that gives way to tender meat the color of meat, the best this world-traveler has had across the plains, the mountains, the continents and the seven seas.
And that ain’t sayin’ nuttin', pardner!
Two fingers to the brim and a tip of my hat to you, Big Tex.
Truly enjoyed their burgers and fries. Quite tasty and juice! Definitely recommend it!
Disfrute mucho de la deliciosa hamburguesa y papas fritas. Sinceramente sabrosa y jugosa! Recomendado definitivamente!
One if the best burgers I've had in sc. REAL fresh bread, toasted. Tasty fries and the option to put whatever garnish you want from a side table. Friendly service. Can't wait to try the American breakfast!
